How your Electricity Bill Works.

Most households and businesses receive an electricity bill four times a year. The information on the bill can be confusing so we are breaking it down to show you the main sections you should monitor.

How Electricity is Measured.

There are a couple of ways, but the main one is the watt-hour. The watt(W) is a measure of electrical power. Light bulbs are marked with a watt rating, such as 40 W, and so are appliances such as heaters, fridges etc. This gives an indication of the amount of electrical power they need to work.

Electricity Bill

An electricity bill records the number of killowatt hours (kWh) consumed over a period, which is used around three months when the meters are read. A killowatt-hour is simply a thousand watt-hours. So, using a 4,000 W air-conditioner for one hour will consume 4 kWh of electricity (or 4,000 Wh).

Electricity Consumption

Electricity consumption is a combination of the amount of electricity (that is, the watt) and the period of time for which it is used. So a standard measure of electricity consumption is the amount of watts used over an hour: the watt-hour(Wh). For example, a 40W light bulb turned on for one hour will use 40 Wh of electricity.

Solar on the Bill

When looking at your electricity bill to determine how much money your solar power system has saved, it is important to understand how the bill is structured. On the bill you will have solar section called ‘Solar Contribution’ this is NOT the total solar savings it is only the amount of unused solar power you exported to the grid. The ACTUAL savings are the amount of solar imported into the home that you didn’t have to buy from the grid plus the export solar credit.
